The flea and the bear: A Christmas Story?

HToday is Christmas Eve and the end of the year is a time for reminiscing. Of nice things and perhaps not so nice things. And we also imagine what the future will have in store for us. Beautiful things and perhaps not so beautiful things. In this article, we start by going back a little further: to the years 2008 – 2010.

A story about Helping and Happiness

In 2008, I wrote a story. And in 2010, I travelled to Cambodia for the first time in my life. The story I wrote is about helping and being happy. About telling and listening, about friendship and lots of little fleas all over the world. Writing it was anything but planned. Suddenly it was there and felt it had to be put down on paper. After that I ran around with a world project in my head for a while, wonderful people took the time to translate it into various languages. Urdu, for example. It’s hard to believe, but I thought about language sponsors like Angelina Jolie and even the Pope. A one-world idea with projects worldwide that should be supported. Well …

As it is with small or even bigger fantasies, they go away just as they came. But the story that I would like to tell you today has remained. I believe that it is one of the beautiful stories. And I know that there are beautiful stories that have really happened and will certainly still happen. I also believe that it is good but also important to tell each other beautiful stories as often as possible. For the heart and soul.

A primary school in Siem Reap, Cambodia

2010, our visit to a small primary school south of Siem Reap. The children recite my story – in their mother tongue, Khmer. Here is a short extract with the first lines.

They are now all grown up, certainly have families and are (hopefully) happy.

At the time, I didn’t understand a single word, but now things are a little different. After a good 3 years, I can generally read the writing and sometimes understand what I’m reading. Not always correctly, although at least I can speak. I practised with my tutor for a year and twisted my tongue. He went through word for word with me with incredible patience. Again and again we picked apart formulations. Here is the story for you in both English and Khmer.

The Bear and the Flea
ខ្លាឃ្មុំ និង​ ​ចៃ

និពន្ធដោយ  អ៊ីងហ្គា ​  ផាម​   គំនូរដោយ លោក ហ្គឺហាត វុន រេស

This is the Bear: 
នេះ គឺជា ខ្លាឃ្មុំ នោះ

And this is the Flea: 
និង នេះ គឺជា ចៃ នោះ

Both lived together in a beautiful old and also cosy house.
ពួកគេ​ ទាំងពីរនាក់ បានរស់នៅ ជាមួយគ្នា ក្នុង ផ្ទះ ចាស់ ស្អាត ដ៏ កក់ក្តៅមួយ

This is the beautiful old and also cosy house: 
នេះ គឺជា ផ្ទះ ចាស់ ស្អាត និង ដ៏ កក់ក្ដៅមួយ នោះ។

The bear took care that everything was always really cozy. 
ខ្លាឃ្មុំ​ តែងតែ បានថែរក្សា​ គ្រប់យ៉ាង អោយមាន ភាព​កក់ក្ដៅ ជានិច្ច។​ 

The bear sofa was the coziest.
សាឡុង គឺជា កន្លែង ដ៏កក់ក្ដៅ បំផុត​ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ។

This is the cosy bear sofa.
6នេះ គឺជា សាឡុង ដ៏កក់ក្ដៅ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ។

The flea went out to work in the big wide world around the corner so that the bear had enough money to always make everything cosy. 
ចៃ ចេញទៅ ធ្វើការ នៅក្នុង ពិភព ដ៏​ ធំ ទូលាយ  មួយ នៅក្បែរ នោះ ដូច្នេះ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ មានលុយ គ្រប់គ្រាន់ ដើម្បី ធ្វើឱ្យ អ្វីៗ គ្រប់យ៉ាង តែងតែ​ កក់ក្ដៅ ជានិច្ច។

For the flea was a famous hop artist in the circus out in the big wide world around the corner.
សម្រាប់ ចៃ គឺជា អ្នកសិល្បៈ សៀក លោត នៅក្នុង ពិភព ដ៏​ ធំ ទូលាយ នៅក្បែរ នោះ ។

This is the circus out in the big wide world around the corner.
នេះ គឺជា សៀក​​​​​ នៅក្នុ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ង ពិភព ដ៏ ធំ ទូលាយ នៅក្បែរ នោះ

Sometimes the flea got  tired of jumping and working. 
ពេលខ្លះ​ ចៃ អស់ កម្លាំង លោត និង ធ្វើការ ។ 

Then he made  himself comfortable in the thick bear fur.
ពេលនោះ វា ធ្វើឱ្យ​ ខ្លួនវា​​ កក់ក្ដៅ​​ នៅក្នុង រោម ដ៏ ក្រាស់​ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ។

The bear was a bit ticklish, but he was happy that the flea felt so comfortable with him.
ខ្លាឃ្មុំ​ រសើប​ បន្តិច​ ប៉ុន្តែ​​ វា​ សប្បាយចិត្ត​ ដែល ចៃ​ មានអារម្ភ កក់ក្ដៅ​ ជាមួយ វា ។

The flea found it really cosy right next to the bear’s right ear.
ចៃ​ យល់ឃើញ​ ថា វា​ មានអារម្ភ កក់ក្ដៅ នៅក្បែរ ត្រចៀក ស្ដាំ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ។

This is the right ear of the bear with the flea.  
នេះ គឺជា ត្រចៀក ស្ដាំ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ជាមួយ ចៃ ។

Sometimes the bear told stories about the big wide world he had already seen. 
ជួនកាល ខ្លាឃ្មុំ​ បាន ប្រាប់ រឿង​ អំពី ពិភព ដ៏ធំ ដែល វា​ បាន ឃើញ នោះ ។

And sometimes the flea told the bear about his latest hops. 
ហើយ ជួនកាល ចៃ ប្រាប់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ អំពី ការលោត ចុងក្រោយ​ របស់​ វា។

This was always very exciting for the bear and the flea.
នេះ​ វា តែងតែ ធ្វើឱ្យ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ និង ចៃ មាន ការរំភើប ។

They both had an exciting life. 
ពួកគេ ទាំងពីរ មាន ជីវិត ដ៏ រំភើបរីករាយ។

One was telling stories and the other was listening eagerly. 
ម្នាក់ កំពុងបាននិយាយប្រាប់ រឿង ហើយ ម្នាក់ ផ្សេងទៀត  បានកំពុងស្ដាប់ រឿង​​​ យ៉ាងអន្ទះសា ។ 

And they always listened in turn.
ហើយ ពួកគេ​​​​ តែងតែ បានប្តូរវេនគ្នាស្តាប់ រឿង ពី គ្នា ម្នាក់ម្ដង ។

One day, the bear said to the flea:
ថ្ងៃមួយ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ បាននិយាយ ទៅកាន់ ចៃ ៖ 

“Hey flea, on my many journeys I have seen a lot of little fleas that are not at all as comfortable as you and me. 
« នែ៎ ចៃ​ ការធ្វើដំណើរ របស់ខ្ញុំ  ខ្ញុំ បានឃើញ សត្វចៃតូចៗ ជាច្រើន ដែល មិន​ មាន សេចក្តីសុខ ដូច អ្នក និងខ្ញុំឡើយ។ 

What do you say we make sure that other fleas are as comfortable as we are?”
តើ អ្នក និយាយថា​ ម៉េច ដើម្បី ប្រាកដ ថា ចៃ ដទៃ មាន ជីវិត ដ៏ កក់ក្ដៅ ដូច យើង ដែរ ?»

“That’s a great idea,” said the flea. “Then I can try out the most foolhardy hopping techniques with the other fleas.”
ចៃ និយាយ ថា ៖ « នោះ ជា​​​​​​​ គំនិត ល្អ ណាស់ ។ ​ អញ្ចឹង ខ្ញុំ នឹង​ អាច សាកល្បង បច្ចេកទេស លោត ដោយ ប្រថុយប្រថាន ជាមួយ ចៃ ផ្សេង ។»

No sooner said than done. 
និយាយ ភ្លាម ធ្វើ ភ្លាម ។

The bear collected lots and lots of little fleas. 
ខ្លាឃ្មុំ បានប្រមូល ចៃ តូចៗ ជាច្រើន ។​

And before long, there was a wild hustle and bustle on the cosy bear sofa. 
ហើយ មិនយូរប៉ុន្មាន ក៏ មាន ការលោត ប្រញាយ រញ៉េរញ៉ៃ នៅលើ សាឡុង ដ៏​ កក់ក្ដៅ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ នោះ ។

This is the wild hustle and bustle on the bear’s sofa.
នេះ​ ជា​ ការលោត ប្រញាយ រញ៉េរញ៉ៃ នៅលើ សាឡុង ដ៏​ កក់ក្ដៅ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ នោះ ។

The bear had his hands busy to make sure the house stayed cosy.
ដៃ​​ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ កំពុង មមាញឹក​​ ដើម្បី ប្រាកដ ថា ផ្ទះ នៅ រក្សា ភាពកក់ក្តៅ

And the flea was happy to show the little fleas his most daring jumps. 
និង​​ ចៃ​​ បានសប្បាយ ដើម្បី បង្ហាញ ចៃ តូចៗ ការលោត​ ដ៏ ហ៊ាន របស់គាត់​។​​  ​

The little fleas practised diligently and sometimes learned quite quickly. 
ចៃ​ តូចៗ អនុវត្ត យ៉ាងរីករាយ​ និង ជួនកាល រៀនចេះ យ៉ាងឆាប់រហ័ស​ ។

So quickly, in fact, that they were soon able to show off their jumps together with the flea in the circus around the corner out in the big wide world.
តាមពិត ឆាប់រហ័ស ណាស់ ពួកគេ​ ឆាប់ៗ បង្អួត ការលោត របស់ពួកគេ​ ទាំងអស់​ គ្នា ជាមួយ ចៃ​ នៅក្នុង ក្រុមសៀក នៅក្នុងពិភពលោក​ ដ៏ ធំ នៅក្បែរនោះ ។

Sometimes even the little fleas didn’t feel like jumping any more. 
ជួនកាល សូម្បីតែ ចៃ ដ៏ តូចៗ នោះ ក៏ មាន អារម្មណ៍ មិន ចូលចិត្ត នឹង ការលោត តទៅទៀត ដែរ ។ 

And then they also made themselves comfortable in the bear’s fur.
ហើយ បន្ទាប់មក ពួកគេ ក៏  ធ្វើឱ្យ ខ្លួនគេ កក់ក្តៅ នៅក្នុង រោម របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ដែរ។

It was quite ticklish for the bear, but he was still happy to have so much room for all the little fleas. 
វា ពិតជា ធ្វើឲ្យ(ឱ្យ) ខ្លាឃ្មុំ រសើប បន្តិច ប៉ុន្តែ វា នៅតែ សប្បាយ ចិត្ត ដោយ មាន កន្លែង ដ៏ ទូលាយ សម្រាប់ ចៃតូចៗ ទាំងអស់ នោះ ។ 

This is the ticklish bear with lots of little fleas in his fur.​
នេះ គឺជា សកម្មភាព ខ្លាឃ្មុំ កំពុងតែ រសើប ដែល មាន ចៃ តូចៗ ជាច្រើន នៅក្នុង រោម របស់វា។

Then the little fleas were telling the bear about hopping. 
បន្ទាប់មក ចៃ តូចៗ ទាំំងនោះ បានកំពុង ប្រាប់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ អំពី ការលោត នោះ ។ 

And sometimes the bear told the little fleas about the big wide world.
ហើយ ពេលខ្លះ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ បានប្រាប់ ចៃ តូចៗ នោះ អំពី ពិភពលោក ដ៏ ធំ ទូលាយ ។

That was always very exciting for the bear and for all the little fleas and for the flea too. 
ការនោះ វា តែងតែ ជា ការរំភើបរីករាយ សម្រាប់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ និង ចៃ ដ៏ តូចៗ ទាំងនោះ ផងដែរ ។

And as always, the flea was in its favourite spot.
ហើយ ដូច សព្វមួយដង ចៃ វា ជា កន្លែង ដ៏ជាទីពេញចិត្ត របស់ចៃ​ ។

Here’s the flea again in the bear’s right ear.
ទីនេះ គឺជា​ ចៃ នៅក្នុង ត្រចៀក ខាងស្ដាំ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ  ម្ដងទៀត 

Sometimes, on very special days, a whole bunch of little fleas would say goodbye to the bear and the flea.
ជួនកាល នៅ ថ្ងៃ យ៉ាងពិសេស ក្រុម ចៃ តូចៗ មួយ ហ្វូង បាននិយាយលា ទៅកាន់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ និង ចៃ មួយ នោះ ។ 

By then, they were big enough to make their own jumps in the big wide world around the other corner. 
ដោយ ពេលនោះ ពួកគេ ធំ ល្មម ដែល អាច លោត ខ្លួនឯង បាន នៅក្នុង ពិភព ដ៏ ធំ ទូលាយ ផ្សេង នៅក្បែរ នោះ ។ 

And they earned money with it, just like the flea. 
ហើយ ពួកគេ ក៏ អាច រកលុយ បាន ដោយសារ ការលោត ដូច ចៃ មួយ នោះ ដែរ ។

And they also made themselves comfortable with another flea or with a bear.
ហើយ ពួកគេ ក៏ អាច ធ្វើឲ្យ ខ្លួនពួកគេ មាន ភាពកក់ក្ដៅ ជាមួយ ចៃ ផ្សេងទៀត ឬក៏ ជាមួយ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ។

For example, on a cosy bear sofa or something.
ឧទាហរណ៍ នៅលើ សាឡុង​ កក់ក្ដៅ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ឬ អ្វី១ ។

And so it didn’t take long: Everywhere in the big wide world around the corner, there was a cosy bear sofa with lots of little fleas and wild hopping.  
ហើយ ដូច្នេះ វា មិន បានយកតាម គ្រប់ទីកន្លែង នៅក្នុង ពិភព ដ៏ធំទូលាយ នៅក្បែរ នោះ មាន សាឡុង ដ៏កក់ក្ដៅ របស់ខ្លាឃ្មុំ ដែល មាន ចៃ ជាច្រើន និង កំពុងលោត យ៉ាងរញ៉េរញ៉ៃ នៅទីនោះ ។

These are the cosy bear sofas in the big wide world around the corner with lots of little fleas and wild hopping.
ទាំងនេះ គឺជា​ សាឡុង ដ៏ កក់ក្ដៅ​​ របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ នៅក្នុង​ ពិភព ដ៏ ធំ នៅក្បែរ នោះ ជាមួយនឹង ចៃ តូចៗ ជាច្រើន និង ការលោត ដ៏ រញ៉េរញៃ ។ 

And the Bear and the Flea?
និង ខ្លាឃ្មុំ នោះ និង ចៃ នោះ​ ?

The two are still telling stories to each other on the cosy bear sofa and leading exciting lives.
អ្នកទាំងពីរ នៅតែ កំពុងប្រាប់រឿង គ្នា ទៅវិញទៅមក នៅលើ សាឡុង របស់ ខ្លាឃ្មុំ និង នាំអោយ ពួកគេ មានជីវិត ដែលរំភើប រីករាយ។ 

But for now, this story ends here…
ប៉ុន្តែ សម្រាប់ ឥឡូវនេះ រឿង នេះ សូម បញ្ចប់ ត្រឹមនេះ ៕

Back to the year 2010

The children had a lot of fun and were really into it. What particularly touched me: The class teacher rehearsed and performed little theatre scenes with the children. That was all 13 years ago. 15 years, in fact, when I wrote the story.

Even today, not all children in Cambodia are able to attend school. They need our help to give them a chance. For inspiration: In the article 25 aid organisations in Cambodia, I introduce you to a selection of really great NGOs.
